ice skating

We went ice skating on Sunday because Julianna got another perfect report card.

We took one of her friends along and it was a lot of fun.

We'd been a couple of times in the last two years, but Julianna's friend had never gone ice skating before. She did great for her first time... staying by the wall for the first ten laps or so and eventually venturing off the wall to hold my hand.

Julianna kept near the wall for a few laps and then just decided to do it on her own and she did very well.  I'm surprised how well she did for only having been twice more than a year ago.

It was quite crowded and several times there were falls just because of the other people. That hurt Julianna's pride and she told me about how frustrating it was several times in the car.

I'm glad I could spend a couple of hours with my girl, even if my knees were killing me after.

this is hard to admit

I'm not sure how it came up, but one night after thinking about the disarray of our house for a while, I asked my husband if he thought we were on the messier side of average or on the cleaner side of average for the standard American household.  His response was that he thought we were messier. We're not Hoarders Level or anything, but indeed messy.

I've known for a long time that our house was not clean.

When we had a small group meeting together regularly in our house for church, it became routine that we would tidy up everything for company each Sunday. It was a lot of work to clean up everything from the whole week to get ready for that but I think everyone has a certain level of cleanliness that they find acceptable for company and we had to get to ours regularly due to hosting that small group meeting.

Of course, I've tried all kinds of clean-as-you go or day-of-the-week "systems" plenty of times before but nothing would ever stick for me.

I've always preferred stacking stuff so that my mess looks like organized chaos.

It seems as the years have gone by and the family of two became a family of three and then four maintaining a clean home has become much more difficult.

Three years ago when I went back to work full time, Jonathan had to pick up a lot of slack around the house. Suddenly we were both working full-time again and he had to help more with the cleaning or it just wouldn't get done.

When I switched jobs this year and started going to school before the kids are even up it's added more to his plate again because he has to get them ready for school, fix their breakfasts and lunches and get them to school on time.

It's really become bad since I started marathon training.  Sometimes I just have to choose to sit down on the couch wash running clothes instead of cleaning bathrooms or changing sheets and then because I run out the door, the sheets don't get changed and the bathrooms don't get cleaned.  I knew there would be a huge time commitment involved in this plan and it's exactly the picture I'd imagined.  Perhaps I should keep running marathons just so I don't have to clean regularly, no?

And I must say that I totally feel for my husband.  However, I KNOW that as with so many things, this is just a season. This too shall pass and we will get back to a more "normal" household routine after the marathon is over, but until then....

I want to find a balance between order and living life.  I don't want my kids to have to put every single toy they play with away before they get out another one.  I don't do that.  [Which could totally be the reason our house is "messier than average" and hence the reason for this post.] I don't know how some of the full-time working parents I know keep their house looking as good as they do, but I do know that for now, we can't do much more.

What say you Internets? What comes before cleaning at your house? And is it OK that I let my kids eat in front of the television on an old Blue's Clue's blanket on the floor a few nights a week because I'm scooting out the door to practice? Also, do you want to see pictures of my nasty house? My husband just might quit speaking to me if I do that.

Facebook, iPhone, general tech thoughts and bloggy randomness

Facebook turns ten tomorrow.  Let that sink in just a little bit.

The iPhone is almost seven. My daughter is a few weeks away from eight.

My students all have passwords that end in 2001, 2002, and 2003 because that's when they were born and I don't get to see dozens of Power Point presentations on Christina Aguilera, 'N Sync, and Michael Jackson anymore.  Instead I am entertained with facts about Minecraft, Ariana Grande, and foamposites.

-----

Do people even read blogs regularly anymore? With the death of Google Reader, and the fact that not many other RSS feed readers have really become as universal, it seems as though people are only getting their web content via social media. Am I wrong?  Please, if you're reading this let me know how you got here.

I never push my blog posts through to Facebook or Pinterest or Instagram or whatever. Until recently I've always just wanted people to be able to CHOOSE to follow my blog if they wanted and still have the option of following ME separately, but with the way things are changing, I am beginning to re-evaluate that.  According to Google Analytics, very little of my traffic comes from Feedly and more comes directly from Google which means that people are searching for whatever to land at my blog.  I don't really care about that I just wondered how people are reading blogs now. Do you think it is mostly through social media or do you think people are still keeping up with particular blogs with some kind of feed reader or with old school bookmarks?

the good, the bad, and the ugly

I had the privilege of babysitting my beautiful niece on Friday night and although I only got to spend 40 minutes with her before she wanted to go to bed for the night, it was very good for my soul.

I got to watch her eat some avocado and I got some quiet time to read after she went to sleep.  It was a great start to the weekend.

Then Saturday was my scheduled long run.  It was only supposed to be in the teens during the early morning so we waited until ten to go and I think that through my body off a bit.  I walked a lot of the 15.5 miles I did and my plan called for 17 miles.  It was hard not to be discouraged, but I have 11 weeks to go before the race and I know that is plenty of time to kill some long runs.

I spent a lot of time at home Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.  We played games with the kids and colored some with Josh.

I loved watching Julianna help her brother navigate some computer games while I read some more. And I loved staying in PJs for a large part of the day.

Sunday night Jonathan and I went to dinner sans kids which is always glorious.  We tried to go to the new Mission Pizza Napoletana but it's not open on Sundays so we ended up at Mellow Mushroom.

Final thoughts for this Monday morning: I'm thinking about getting bangs. Would love to know your thoughts on bangs today. Trendy or just no?

up to

praying:
For ridiculous faith like Elisha. I finished reading this prophet's story in 2 Kings and have been aspiring for such faith ever since I finished the study.

anticipating:
the Winter Olympics and multiple trips to the beach after my marathon (I know those things look funny side by side but it's the truth so there it is)

visiting:
For Christmas my sister gave us a NC Zoo membership and we spent the gorgeous day yesterday visiting some animals. At one point Josh declared, "Come on, people! Those animals haven't moved for like a hundred years!"

reading:
My iPod died and I lost several audio books that I was in the middle of. I find it harder to squeeze in time to read a "real" book but nevertheless I have just finished The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (which was delightful, BTW) and am re-starting The Cuckoo's Calling.

coveting:
We recently had a toilet completely crack in our house and we've had to replace it and wait on the new one to come... lots of problems with the store and the new one that came in was broken, etc. Then we decided to take the nasty wallpaper down while the toilet was out. In addition, I've had several friends move within the last year or so and watching their house decorating progress develop on social media has me coveting new hardwood floors, kitchen counter tops, and new appliances.  Maybe one day.

wishing:
for snow and days out of school

trying:
Doing my best to eat these seven sickness fighting foods. It seems like I've been more sick this winter than usual and I'm trying to do what I can to remedy that. But these are delicious:

mulling over:
I just read this article: How to Destroy Your Child's Heart and Trust -- One Facebook Post at a Time and I've been sitting here contemplating all of those Facebook posts that I've chuckled at where parents have shamed their children for making bad choices. I sure hope that I resist the temptation to mock my children when they make mistakes.
